Asset Declaration: President Buhari Under Fire From Popular Lawyer

Popular Lagos lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has criticised the declaration of assets by President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice president, Yemi Osinbajo, labeling it as too late and inconsequential.

The lawyer made it known in a statement published by Daily Post on Friday, September 4, in which he accused President Buhari of making known his assets on Thursday, September 3, after some of those details were already known by the public. He added that the motive behind Buhari’s declaration was to gain public sympathy.

He said that the declaration shouldn’t have been limited to the president alone but to his wives and grown up children.

Also in the statement, Adegboruwa criticised Buhari’s recent declaration of war against corruption. He argued that the president’s action was a move to paint Goodluck Jonathan bad while allowing projects that would favour him to go on.

Part of the statement read:

“In recent times, the Buhari administration has bombarded Nigerians with the campaign of war against corruption. It has thus abeled almost every project of the past administration, as ladened with corruption. To this end, such projects are either cancelled outrightly, or suspended temporarily. This is the case with the second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway construction and indeed the Ore-Shagamu expressway construction. One would have thought that this would be the trend all over the land. But alas, the President was comfortable to retain and indeed commend the Abuja Centenary Project, of the same Jonathan administration, which has now been singled out of the corrupt projects. The President has endorsed it for completion.”

Meanwhile, a group called the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project have praised the public declaration of assets by President Buhari and Osinbajo. The group regarded it as a fulfillment of  one of the promises made by the president.
