‘Most vehicle owners approach agents to get vehicle cover. Why can’t they just make inquiries from an insurance company? They go to the local government to be issued insurance certificate. It is better for anyone who wants insurance cover to first approach the company that owns the policy,” she said.

To avoid getting fake certificates, the regional manager advised applicants to approach the issuing insurance company for confirmation.

”If you obtain a motor insurance certificate or policy and you are not sure if is authentic or not, you can confirm by writing the company. We have email and every contact details on our website. They will easily reply and confirm if the certificate is from the company or not. Then you can be assure you have an insurance cover or not,” she said.

Funmilayo however, said efforts are being made by the regulatory body, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), in concert with Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs), to curb the menace.

” VIOs are now involved. When the officers request for your vehicle insurance, they crosscheck with their records or data. They have the record on their system. They would input the name of the issuing firm or company. If not found on the data, that is fake.’’ she said.
