A man of God (names withheld) has allegedly defrauded a former member of his church of N5,000,000.
Vanguard reports that the prophet obtained money from Rita Okoro and her family members, while pretending to assist in securing the release of her brother, who had been detained by Lagos police since January 17,2015.
Okoro and her sister Ngozi were members of the prophet’s church until they discovered that he had been taking advantage of their difficult family situation.
It turned out that Rita and her family were not the only victims of the prophet’s fraudulent activities. However, not many members of his church, who were to exploited and defrauded by the prophet, have mustered the courage to speak up.
Narrating her story, Okoro said that problems in her family started in January, when police operatives from the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) arrested her brother over an allegation of being an informant to a kidnapping gang. According to her, SARS neither charged him to court nor allowed their family or legal representatives to see him. Therefore, aggrieved family members approached the prophet for assistance.

Okoro said that the prophet agreed to help and made calls to a ‘top police officer’ at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. After that, the prophet claimed that he had travelled to the capital and started demanding money for logistics.
The woman said that several times she had given money to the prophet and paid some into his account, amounting to N5,000,000.
At this point she sensed foul play and wrote a petition through to Special Fraud Unit, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissionand, The Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission with a view to assisting her to recover money and to investigate the prophet’s activities.
Earlier this year, a popular pastor in Lagos reportedly bolted with one of his church member’s N10million. The church member had given the money to the pastor to pray over it before using it to start a business in Lagos.
