In a bid to check increasing rate of road carnage by trailers and tanker drivers, the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) has set up 30 special centers to screen drivers of articulated vehicles.
Lagos state sector commander, Hyginus Omeje disclosed this today, June 30, 2015, during a one day sensitization rally for corporate and commercial drivers in Anthony and environs areas of Lagos state.
Omeje who was represented by Assistant Corp Commander Hamzat Ganiyu, Unit Commander, Ojota unit of the Lagos State Sector Command, stated that the special centres became necessary following the growing cases of ghastly accidents caused by articulated vehicle drivers in the country in recent times
“The menace of tanker drivers and other articulated vehicle drivers is being taken care of by the corp. We are collaborating with the owners/operators of these vehicles to ensure that this menace is halted”.
”We have posted our officers to the terminals to conduct pre-shipping screening. The drivers will be made to undergo training and retraining on safety tips. We want them to have the safety tips on their fingertips; safety on the road is the responsibility of everybody. The law will come hard on the drivers and the operators/owners of these vehicles will not be spared if we find out they have not done what they should do to stop accident on the road” he said.

As a way of stopping road accident, Omeje also advised drivers to enroll in accredited driving schools.
“Somebody who has gone through the routine of driving school will definitely be a careful driver. Somebody who uses fake licence has not gone through driving school and they constitute menace on the road.”
”The excuse that people give for patronising touts who issue fake driver’s licence is that the process is tedious but this is not true. The application online is not difficult and getting your biometric captured is faster. We will continue to clamp down on the issuers of these fake licences and any driver caught using fake licence will be made to pay a fine while his or her vehicle will be impounded”.
Bunmi Shoneye, Anthony unit head, stated that the corp will continue to conduct regular sensitisation workshop to curb road accidents.
