A US military aircraft has crashed at an airport in eastern Afghanistan, killing all eleven people on board.

A US-military spokesman confirmed the crash which took place at Jalalabad airport around midnight on Thursday, October 1.

According to the spokesman, those aboard the ill-fated flight include six US military service members and five passengers, civilians who were contracted employees of the US-led international force.

The Taliban claimed it had shot down the aircraft, but the army spokesman said there were no reports of enemy fire at the time and the incident was under investigation.

Aljazeera reports that the contractors had been working for “Resolute Support,” a NATO-led training mission.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time a US-military aircraft has gone down in Afghanistan. In 2012, US defense officials reported that an army helicopter, with four people believed to be on board, crashed on a night mission in southwestern Afghanistan.

According to the Associated Press news agency, four US troops were aboard the helicopter- an Army Black Hawk.

Officials at the scene said “don’t expect” that any of the four survived.

It would be recalled that last year, NATO pulled out most of its combat troops from Afghanistan, leaving only a small contingent of about 10,000 US soldiers.

The aim of leaving the US soldiers is to partner with other NATO troops and private contractors, with a focus on training security forces for Afghanistan.
